EWB-ASCE Navajo Water Project

Our Project

Background

We believe everyone has the right to clean, running water. Unfortunately, up to 40% of the Navajo Nation lacks this basic right, and our team is trying to change that!

The Navajo Water Project is a joint, on-campus project between the American Society of Civil Engineers and Engineers Without Borders that began during the 2016 - 2017 school year. From civil engineering to economics, our project is comprised of students from various majors. Although from different backgrounds, we share the common goal of wanting to make a difference in other communities, each bringing something unique to this project.

This past year, our members have collectively designed a solar-powered, pressurized water system to bring individual families running water. Because our implemented system is completely off-grid, we can provide running water to families on any part of the reservation, including the most remote locations. Last summer, we successfully built a prototype for one family and was able to witness the difference we made in their lives.

Continuing on our passion to create further change, our focus is to expand the project and develop water systems for two other families this year. By donating to our campaign, you will help two more families experience a luxury we often take for granted. Help us make a difference in the Navajo Nation, and thank you for your support!

Schedule

Currently, we are in the process of testing our system designs for our first implementation trip in March! Our members are really looking forward to meeting with the families again and begin implementing what we've worked all year on!

Below is the schedule for our project:

Research | Our power, water treatment, drafting, and piping teams spend Fall Quarter researching concepts that go into the design of the system.

Assessment trip | During Thanksgiving break, a small team visits the Navajo families to take measurements at the site.

Design | During Winter Quarter, the team begins the design phase of the project by utilizing modeling software to simulate the design, building a prototype system, and testing the system under various conditions.

Testing | After creating the design, our members practice constructing the system. This allows us to see whether design changes need to be made.

Implementation trip | During both spring and summer breaks, a small team travels again to the reservation to the families' homes to implement the system.
